2 Stars american casino guide
If you’re going to Las Vegas, there are enough free publications that you don’t need this. If you want to know about all the casinos in the US, it’s a good reference.

5 Stars Foolish to visit Vegas without it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have been going to Vegas three or four times a year for more than a decade and we would not think about going without at least one (usually two) of these books. The free drinks, two for one drinks and two for one buffet coupons pay for the books many, many times over… Even in these economic times and with all the deals being offered, one cannot afford to see Vegas without at least one of these books.

4 Stars Lots of great coupons
We purchased the book for the coupons and were not disappointed. It also gives some information on casino RV parking which we will use. All in all well worth the money. We even purchased a second book for our son and his wife.

5 Stars Best Casino Guide - Hands Down!
I was a little reluctant to purchase this, however, ran into a couple who had it with them last time I was in Vegas. They say they purchase one each time they go there and it really pays off. I will be using mine the end of March, 2009 when I return there and I can’t believe all the FREE and Buy 1/Get 1 coupons I will be using. Great deal!!! I also will purchase each time I go!

5 Stars American Casino Guild 2009
I have bought this book every time we have gone to Las Vegas in the Last 3 years and find it saves me alot of money. It is also good at other casinos fthat we go to. Highly recommend it.

The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide How to Exploit Her Inner Psycho

Pickup Artists’ Psychological Secrets to Turn on, Charm, and Seduce almost any Woman.

The Art of the Pickup involves analyzing your target, determine her values, beliefs and weaknesses, and role-playing her desires.
Sexual Persuasion occurs by stimulating her subconscious emotions and desires. You create value and scarcity for yourself, remove her barriers, build trust, and initiate the close. The best Pickup Artists are teasingly cocky, have a cutting sense of humor, and the poise to pull it off with class.

The dynamics of Sexual Persuasion share the same techniques perfected by all great salesmen. Any man with the right tools and attitude can transform himself and create an exhilarating lifestyle he controls with style and ease. Face the facts. Women in courting mode are phenomenal actresses; many devote their whole lives to role-playing, camouflaged appearances, and storytelling. They manipulate men by dangling potential sex to satisfy their ego, play games, or vacuum your wallet. Understanding how seduction works is a double-edged sword. You can either go through life playing the victim, or educate yourself using the techniques to your advantage.
The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide reveals how to:

  • Predict, anticipate, & easily influence female behavior.
  • Create instant attraction and lust in seconds.
  • 20 Seduction speaking techniques that create Irresistible Sexual Charisma.
  • Master Speed Dating, eliminate 80% of your dating time & money spent, with a superior closing ratio.
  • Read women instantly; spot and avoid the Psychos, Game Players, and gold digging cons.
  • Build instant rapport with Smooth-talking Sexual Persuasion.
  • Know exactly what she wants to see and hear, and feel.

Considering marriage? With a failure rate of 50%, the best defense is a good offense. Remove her financial incentive to file with a pro-active asset protection plan well in advance. In straightforward, easy-to-understand terms learn the Advantages, Limitations, and costs: the complete how, what, and where to setup multiple Trusts, FLPs, and LLCs. Learn how to:

  • Legally Protect your ASSets from the whims of divorce courts and frivolous lawsuits.
  • Shield a large salary, limit alimony to one based on a nominal salary YOU choose.
  • Structure your financial planning and shield your entire estate layers deep and out of sight.
  • Remove the assets from your name. You Control everything, but own nothing.

Tired of the Chase and want to elevate your Game to the next level? Section three is a Jet-setting Bachelor’s travel guide to the best Sex Vacations around the World: where gorgeous young girls compete for you. Spoil yourself rotten, and be a Professional Bachelor.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Must own for bachelors
Invaluable financial advice. If you’re considering marriage, buy this. With the divorce rate at 50%, and considering the litigious environment we live in, there’s no reason not to protect yourself with asset protection. The book contains a concise guide to locking away your assets in self-defense BEFORE problems occur. My attorney vouched for all of it.

What’s this book worth to you? For the price of two drinks, you’ll save half your assets.

1 Star Spend your money elsewhere
The book is filled with cheesy lines, obvious advice, corny humor and terrible grammar. Buy Magic Bullets instead.

4 Stars Interesting Guidebook to Bachelorhood Mastery
I wouldn’t include this in the group of PUA how-to guides like Mystery Method or Layguide because it cover a lot more ground than those two books. The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide’s scope covers far more than just how to meet women. In the author’s view, that’s the somewhat easy part. It’s the how to deal with women after you’ve bedded them that makes this book so much different than the rest.

So what else does it cover? How to protect you assets, how to deal with crazy women, where to go on vacation to meet and bang women. I can totally see some people not liking the way the writer views women and even I winced a few times, but I got over it. There are some real nuggets of wisdom that may not make an immediate impact to your life as a Player, but will help you overall keep your life from spinning out of control because of women.

It could be better written and maybe there will be a second edition some day that cleans things up, but it’s truly a unique book with a different perspective that’s love it or hate it. I bought one of the author’s other books called The Hedonist which is much more focused on the subject of bedding women around the world. I recommend that book as well if you plan on doing any international travel.

Overall, I recommend this book to any single guy or divorced guy who wants to better understand female psychology and how you can work it to your advantage.

5 Stars Brilliant Title, great advice
Great advice. Anyone who’s studied psychology or marketing will recognize the content and like how he’s tailored it towards dating. Underneath all the witty shock value, you learn how to make yourself more physically and intellectually attractive and create a subconscious emotional connection. It improves your influence and persuasion skills with women and its application would be as useful in business.

Other themes; speed seduction via psychology (showing social status and willingness to walk), how to protect yourself emotionally and financially from ever being manipulated again. There’s a very detailed psychological profiling of the female mind. It shows how to read women and better understand what makes each of a dozen different personalities tick. Determine her personality type and then tailor your approach to create sexual chemistry and steer her emotions in the encounter. You’ll recognize ex-girlfriends personalities described to the T and immediately see where you went right or wrong.

Women all size up men. They have years of practice at it between chick lit, The View, Oprah, and their 10,000 hours of yapping away with each other dissecting men they date. This book levels the playing field for men.

If you’re in your early 20’s, a lot of this will seem rough around the edges and may not yet apply in your life (unless you’re hunting cougars). It’s never too early to learn. If you’re 30+, you’ve been around long enough to recognize exactly what he is writing about. We all know guys stuck in a life sucking relationship, had a friend get rolled in a divorce when it was her fault and he still pays out the nose. This book advises how to steer clear of the dark side of women and their entitlement mentality that has become so common, particularly among the early 30’s and/or divorced women. Most importantly, it shows you how to legally seal away your assets and not get destroyed in a divorce.

The writing is funny and crude but a brutally honest perspective. I found myself constantly laughing and agreeing with what he says with great observation humor. A highly entertaining and interesting read. For lighter reading, pick up his other book that just came out. For photo-journalism it’s the funniest, wildest, raunchiest memoir I’ve ever read.

High Heels and Dirty Deals - Globetrotting Tales of Debauchery from a Binge-drinking Nymphomaniac

4 Stars Get this one Guys
This book has made the rounds at the office, with a lot of guys going around quoting some of the funniest lines from the book. Tate is a great cynical writer. The guy really holds nothing back and tells it like it is today for Alpha males in a PC metrosexual world full of divorce happy women. Great persuasion and influence advice on dating girls on your terms. The section I thought the best is the financial shelter tips. He advises every guy to set up asset protection before you’re even engaged, and to let the girl know in advance. Brilliant advice really. The gold diggers will walk saving you a lifetime of aggravation. Either way you’re protected in case things go wrong.

I know at least half dozen guys who’ve been ridden hard and dry in a divorce who could have benefited immensely from this advice. The book is a great primer for studying up on the numerous options for self-employed business men to the wealthy. Explicit details for setting up shelters in layman terms…the how and where, what to do, what to avoid, etc. A quick study that will save you a lot of billable hours by being prepared in advance.

Cruise Confidential A Hit Below the Waterline Where the Crew Lives Eats Wars and Parties One Crazy Year Working on Cruise Ships Travelers Tales

Bruns, founder of a successful software company, decided to follow his new girlfriend, who worked on a luxury cruise liner, and enjoy a high-seas adventure. His plan, to get hired on as a member of the crew, seemed simple enough, but Bruns quickly discovered he had no idea what he was getting himself into. This is a very funny, behind-the-scenes exploration of a cruise ship. Imagine a combination of Innocents Abroad and The Love Boat, with a dash of Peyton Place, and you’ll have a good idea of what

No Worries Hawaii A Vacation Planning Guide for Kauai Oahu Maui and the Big Island

April 28, 2009 by Vacation Destination · Leave a Comment

No Worries Hawaii A Vacation Planning Guide for Kauai Oahu Maui and the Big Island

Get To The Heart of Your Destination
Half of Hawaii’s 8 million yearly tourists are first-timers, often unsure of which island to visit, where to stay, and what to choose to do.
NO WORRIES HAWAII, a companion book to the Sprout’s adventure guides for each of the islands, comes to the rescue. The book is also useful for repeat visitors or locals looking for new adventures.
Readers first take an armchair voyage, in which they nail down their vacation style (a scouting expedition, a romantic getaway, a solo or group adventure, invigorating, relaxing, healing). These likings are matched with what Hawaii has to offer. A clever but simple self-test allows readers to sort through Hawaii’s assets: beaches, nightlife, trails, gardens, attractions, cultural sites, surfing, snorkeling, 36 categories in all, to determine which are important and which island is best.
In the second part of NO WORRIES HAWAII, readers take their decisions from part one and receive all the practical and money-saving advice needed to book a vacation that makes the armchair voyage become a real one. Included also is a complete list of what to pack.
The third part of the book is full of tips on what to do and what not to do after arriving in the islands. Readers will deplane as kama’aina (locals), having the benefit of the Sprout’s 20 years of exploration.
Sections include how to plan days to maximize fun and avoid hassle, finding free entertainment, car rental and accommodation money-savers. Readers are advised on how to, and whether to, book tours (snorkeling, sailing, helicopter, horseback, etc.). The book’s safety tips are a literal lifesaver, and the everyday advice on driving, hiking, and beach-going are essential forgetting the most fun out of every day.
The meat of NO WORRIES HAWAII is its Best Of section, a listing of Hawaii’s top attractions: museums, rainforest dayhikes, snorkeling coves, walk-around beach towns, surfing spots, places to watch surfers, mountain bike trails, people-watching beaches, botanical gardens, short strolls to views, cultural sites, luxury resorts, volcano hikes, bird-watching forests, waterfalls, churches, remote beaches, family beach parks, golf courses, and more.
Taken together, the 50 categories neatly sum up the best of Hawaii. Readers can use these listings as a reference when they get to their chosen island.
NO WORRIES HAWAII is beautifully designed, complimented by more than 100 color photographs, and also contains a “wikiwiki phonebook” with all the contact numbers needed to put a vacation together.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Average Book
I liked the top lists. I liked the test A LOT.

But the book, lacks massive details. Do not purchase this as your only book for Hawaii. It’s a good add on book to much better higher rated travel books and are blue in color.

5 Stars Great Planning Guide
We just returned from a great trip to Hawaii thanks largely to this guide. I spent quite a bit of time planning the trip and looking into guides before choosing this one. I read all of the reviews for this guide before choosing it and, after having such a succesful trip, I can only say that the one star reviews must be written by the jealous competition. This guide really works! I particularly like the clever and simple self test. It really helps you figure out what you are looking for in your vacation. We spent a big part of our time on the Big Island and I would also recommend the Big Island Trailblazer by the same author. We found beautiful hidden beaches in this book that were not even mentioned in other guides. No Worries Hawaii is a winner for helping you get the most out of your travel time in Hawaii.

1 Star Not a good guide
This book is very shallow. Information is often sparse or misleading. Just for example there are mentioned some beaches that have very few parking space and they don’t mention that there are plenty of parking on a neighbor beach and just 5 min to walk. Maps are very schematic - you’ll miss everything.

I went to Kauai and this book was waste of time and money.

For Kauai (at least) buy The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed - excellent guide. This was my savior.

5 Stars Terrific book for preplanning a trip to Hawaii
This book is terrific for preplanning a trip to Hawaii. The author gives great descriptions of the islands and their attractions but what makes this an outstanding book is his approach to planning your trip. There is an analysis of the different type of travelers and an overview of lodging styles. The best section is his `test’ of your interests to determine which island has the sights that really matter to you. He includes everything from picnicking to snorkeling to religious shrines to volcano watching to horseback riding and more. With his lists, I was able to prioritize what I wanted to see and what islands to visit. It also told me where I needed a rental car and where I did not. He has a lot of helpful telephone numbers and beautiful photographs. If you want a lot of detail about hotels and activities, I would go online. But, if you want to look at the big picture first and get your bearings, start with this book.

3 Stars Not enough detail
I have several guides for the various Hawaiian Islands. This guide has a lot of information but not a lot of detail on the specifics. It was not as helpful in providing details on why they list specific items and places as the top choices.

Golfs Sacred Journey Seven Days at the Links of Utopia

April 28, 2009 by Vacation Destination · Leave a Comment

Golfs Sacred Journey Seven Days at the Links of Utopia

You never really know when you might meet someone who will change your life. Golf’s Sacred Journey is a story about a “chance” meeting between a fictitious golf professional and his unorthodox mentor. As the story unfolds, we-along with the pro-learn lessons about golf and life that we never expected to learn in places we never expected to learn them. “David Cook is a man of faith,” writes Tom Lehman in the foreword. “He has made it perfectly clear how faith can and should interact with all areas in our life.”

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Comment from a “mental-game specialist” - Ph.D.
I hope some day I get to meet Dr. Cook and shake his hand. I had started writing a mental-game for golf book with life-perspective undertones, but have now officially stopped. All I need to do is point people to this book. All I have to say is WOW! This is not only my favorite mental-game book about golf, it is my favorite sporting book period! I will not be surprised to hear if it ultimately sells 10 million or more copies. This book is simply priceless. Dr. Cook hits on all of the major sport psych. strategies in golf in the most fascinating and engaging way. For four days I didn’t want to put it down, and didn’t want the story to end when I finished it. For the record, I’m a “mental-game specialist” myself, and am simply amazed at this product. Aside from the Good Book, I’ve never been blown away by a story with as many life and skill lessons as this one. It may be the greatest sporting book ever written!

- Derek de la Pena, Ph.D.

4 Stars Golf’s Scared Journey: Seven Days at the LInks of Utopia
Being a struggling golfer, which caused me to be interested in this book I enjoyed it very much. The book deals with the emotional aspect of the game and nails the feelings one goes through. The author paints some wonderful pictures and I had a hard time putting this book down. The ending of the book was excellent.

5 Stars An enjoyable and easy read
It took about 2 1/2 hours to read through this short book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. There are a lot parallels between golf and life, and this reminds us that in both we need to do the right things for the right reasons, knowing what those reasons are. The main character spends 7 days learning this, and culminates with a less than clear presentation of the gospel. I appreciated the insights within, and would recommend it as a conversation point with anybody, but especially golfers. I do not know if my score will be any better, but hopefully I will enjoy it all more!

4 Stars Great Read
a great read that is entertaining as well … parts could bring some ‘moist eyes’ and truly speaks to the heart and soul of the reader!

5 Stars Fantastic !
This book is great for anyone. I am not a golfer but enjoyed it thoroughly. The writer keeps your attention the whole way through and you can’t wait til you find out what happens next. It is a great story about life and how we can learn to overcome our fears and “self” attitude and know who really is in control of all things. “PTL”

How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner Second Edition

How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner Second Edition

“… a business-savvy, informative, practical guide and an absolute “must-read” … — Midwest Book Review

“A great resource for all second home owners!” — Vacation Rentals by Cyberrentals Magazine 2004-2005

“Christine should be proud; it is both informative and easy to read.” — James Dicks: The Active Investor Magazine, Jennifer Dicks Burg

“One of 27 Real Estate experts you MUST Meet” List included Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki & Robert Shemin. — New York Post, October 22,2004

“The title is a mouthful; the book is concise and to the point.” — RealtyTimes, Broderick Perkins, Aug, 2004

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Looks good after my first reading
This looks like a well written and fairly thorough book on the subject. Will update as we go into more detail, but the best I have found on this topic so far.

5 Stars Very informative
This book provides excellent advise on having a succesful rental vacation home. I highly recommend it. Christine covers all aspects of renting vacation properties.

5 Stars I wish I’d read this before
I wish I’d read this book before we bought a vacation rental. Lots of good information. And one piece of the information could save you thousands of $ and loads of grief.

4 Stars Tremendous Resource for Vacation Owners!
As an owner and manager of several vacation properties, I was quite impressed with Kristine’s thoroughness and attention to detail. This is a very read-able book, flows easily from topic to topic, and covers all the basics.

Of particular importance is her break-even analysis for figuring out the profitability of a rental before buying. Also, while I’m a do-it-yourself-vacation rental type owner, I realize most people prefer the ready-to-rent approach Ms. Karpinski advocates.

The Resources found in the Appendix sections at the end make this book a definite buy for any current or future vacation property owner. Kristine is a good teacher and presents well in both her books and blog.

5 Stars Finally Someone Talks About Insurance
I was impressed with this book because most rental managers don’t even discuss insurance or know anything about it. Yet, this book devotes several pages on this topic. So, If you got a vacation rental, or thinking about it like me, your common garden variety homeowners policy won’t do. You got to pay twice or more on the premium for a vacation home.

The Hedonist World Travel Guide

As seen on TV, “The Hedonist” is the Sex Bible for Single Male vacations. This in-depth guide is written for the Professional Hedonist, the guy who knows exactly what he wants, is willing to pay for it, and likes to spoil himself rotten. If you love exotic tropical excursions with Golf, Deep Sea Fishing, Casinos, and sexy young girls who always say yes, this book is for you. This detailed travel assistant covers 20 affordable tropical cities, from the hot spots in Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, and the Caribbean, to a dozen untarnished island paradises in South America, Asia, and Europe, where you’ll be treated like a King for $25! A fascinating read written from personal experiences, in a hysterical, Maxim-like sarcastic style that seems more like a Bachelor Party conversation than a travel guide. You’ll learn the how and the where to go for all your sports activities, as well as meeting your uninhibited “dates”, with the low down on the club procedures, pricing and terminology, and local updated websites w/maps and details. Red Light Districts, Brothels, full service nude strip clubs, massage parlors, outcall escorts, horny locals, beach play toys, whatever your preference, it’s all here…complete with reviews, addresses, phone numbers, and first hand field reports. Included is a must-read 30 pages of Sex Tourism 101 advice on mastering the games and psychology of the local women you’ll meet. This is the taboo Bachelor’s Vacation Guide that we’ve all been waiting for, without a single politically correct word in it. All in all, a fantastic resource, packed with info you can’t find anywhere else, over 200 pages of extensive, concise, well-researched advice. A real time and money saver. Why settle for anything but the best, and why gamble on hopes. Bet on the sure thing. The girls are waiting…

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars A must own
I bought this guide on referral from a former running buddy of mine. After 3 trips I can tell you it is spot on accurate, extremely funny, and points you towards everything a single guy wants to do in a hurry.

Written for guys who love casinos, ocean fishing, exotic golf courses, and umbrellas drinks shared with hotties on the beach. Some of the most kicking party cities in the world, with a lot of cities you probably have never heard of. While you’re at it, pick up a copy of his new book; it’s flat out the funniest thing ever written.

High Heels and Dirty Deals - Globetrotting Tales of Debauchery from a Binge-drinking Nymphomaniac

5 Stars Amen
Though the book is a little dated, based on the author assessment of Rio de Janeiro, a place I frequent. I realize the author knew what he was talking about and not third party hear say, I would be inclined to go to some locales in his book that I never ventured to before, just on the strength of that book look for a good time with no one to show me around or hold my hand unlike when I when to Rio & Bahia Brazil for the first time. The most important thing for a single guy on vacation is someone to show him where the action at. Knowledge is power and access especially in a foreign country compounded with not speaking the language.

The Rain.

4 Stars back to the editor
Funny, funny book. It’s a fast read with some great quotes. The editing leaves much to be desired. There are lots of sections that are just cut & pasted out of another semi-related section. Punctuation is very poor and formatting was not accomplished at all. I think I spent more time editing term papers in the 11th grade than the author/editor did here. Regardless, the book is good for a chuckle and would help any guy on one of these sexcapades.

5 Stars This Book is the Truth
I was soo surprised on how accurate this book really was, It was almost like Brett had just left Rio the week before I got there. I just returned from Carnaval 2008 and I had the time of my life! This city is a true male twenty-somethings bachelor’s paradise. One of my male friends that travels the world put me on to this book while I was there, and it officially became a checklist. Truly unbelieveable how accurate and precise this book is, and is highly recommended to anyone who wants to be in this “secret society”. Just follow the rules to this book, or add them to your current agenda, and you too could have the time of your life in one of these many great cities, just like I did in Rio. I’m buying the book for future destinations, and I’ve also purchased his other book “The Professional Bachelor”, which are now known to me as the The “Red” book, and the “Black” book. Both are must haves and I hope Brett keeps all these goodies coming in the future!

5 Stars Caution: Don’t Travel with the Book!
Please do not carry a copy of the book on your travels. Upon your return, if you are searched by U.S. Customs, this will be further “evidence” that you went to a foreign country to participate in illegal activity. Although it may be legal in the country you visit, the U.S. has the ability to enforce its laws on you as a citizen wherever you go.

Most of us will not be further interrogated by Customs upon return. But if you are one of the unfortunate ones, you do not want a book detailing how to find certain types of women in your possession. Leave it at home!

With IMBRA, it is readily apparent that the U.S. wants to keep men bottled up to suffer its women.

If you must, simply transcribe the part of the book you need and discard of it before your return flight to the ‘Land of the Free.’

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A Must Have for Anyone Who Travels!!!
This book is a gold mine! Do your self a favor and buy one for yourself and a few more to have on hand for gifts in the future!!! I consider myself pretty well organized when it comes to travel with our son, but this book gave me so many more ideas and tips. Well worth it, and enjoyable to read!

5 Stars A must-read before you travel overseas with a baby!
I recently purchased several books on traveling with children, and this was by far the best. By the time I finished the book, I had several pages of notes written down, including things to pack that I never thought of, things to do before I go, products to check out and websites to visit. Reading this book has made me feel much more prepared and less nervous for my upcoming trip to France with a 15 month old, and I am confident that our trip can only go smoother having read this one!

5 Stars For Families on the Go!
A must-have resource for families on the go. Interesting reading and packed with helpful tips. Easy-to-use charts to help families find the best airlines, ships, etc. for their specific needs. Perfect gift for parents of young children!

5 Stars This book ROCKS!!!
Seriously, this is a travel bible for new parents. What a huge help this book has been from selecting a good stroller (wished we would have found this BEFORE we had our baby for car seat info too!) to calling ahead to find out if a hotel has a crib saving our trunk space from a pack and play or other. Prepping the diaper bag and carry ons have never been simpler and I have memorized the shopping list for baby must haves while traveling. Never would have thought of some of that stuff! The blog is excellent too. Please give this gift to new mommies and daddies with your baby shower gift…I am so grateful for the different age sections and different types of travel reviews. Thank you Ms. Rivoli!

5 Stars Great help for parents traveling with children
I’m flying to Europe alone with my 18 mo old daughter next month and I found this book to be a great help in preparing for the trip. It contains a lot of useful information, tips, and things I would’ve completely overlooked had I not read this book.

Cabins A Guide to Building Your Own Nature Retreat

Cabins A Guide to Building Your Own Nature Retreat

Cabins have come a long way from the 19th-century rustic structures familiar to all school children. The Stileses, a husband-and-wife team who have collaborated on a number of woodworking titles, show how to build a cabin that reflects the builder’s lifestyle; some are simple, while others contain multiple rooms and utilities. Although the authors make it look easy, the amount of work that goes into a log cabin is staggering (even small cabins require 60 or more logs that each take five to seven hours to hew by hand). Other designs include a Japanese moon-gazing cabin, a pyramid-shaped cabin, and an A-frame cabin. A section on cabin accessories (including brief construction hints for rustic wood furniture) and a list of sources (including web addresses) completes this title. It should be part of in-depth public library collections.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Good & Workable
Ive begun a mission to build a small cabin on some family property here in Oregon. Recently, Ive done a good deal of research and purchased 5 notable books on how to build a cabin/small dwelling.

Upon reviewing this material it looks like its well thought out, but is lacking in alot of depth. Gives a wonderful representation of what could be done, and what is possible (something which other books lack).

Out of these 5 books, Ive got two which will carry me to the end with great depth, and 3 that will be “reserves” for ideas. This is definitely the top of my reserve pile, and my first for pictures of ideas.

4 Stars Many good ideas and a few good laughs
As others have noted, this is a useful book for generating ideas and getting the creative juices flowing. I bought it to obtain those features, and it did not disappoint me.

The Stiles are, apparently, a prolific couple on this and similar topics, and they certainly deserve credit for effective packaging and marketing. David Stiles has filled the book’s pages with material–some good, some irrelevant, and some good for entertainment–but he certainly has filled it nonetheless. The layout and tone of this book is vaguely reminiscent of a copy of an early 1970s Mother Earth News. The reader’s challenge is to extract the kernals of insight from the volumes of chaff. What the book lacks in detailed engineering and construction discussion and techniques it makes up for in peripheral and, in some cases, funny advice. Consider the detailed description of the electronic vehicle-arrival and gate-unlocking monitors–this in a book purported to find ways to get one in touch with mother nature and perhaps forego electricity entirely. Or the sketch plan for the garden-hose remedy against racoons infiltrating your metal trashcan. The advice is intriguing enough, but one suspects that a bit more discussion on well-installation or obtaining running water might be in order before turning to a technological solution involving the use of pressurized water for a racoon problem. Given the Stiles’ ties to Manhattan, maybe the accepted security measures of their current environment don’t seem quite as ridiculous or irrelevant as they probably do to anyone who actually lives in a rural area. Or consider their admonition against Coleman lanterns being “Scary and hard to light.” Hmmm, I, too, have fears and I’m certainly not the most dexterous fellow, but I’ve learned that five minutes of hands-on practice can turn even the most hardcore urbanite into a safe and proficient Coleman-lantern lighter. Something tells me Mr. Stiles has not taken the time to do the same, and this casts a disconcerting pall over the value of much of his other advice. How much of it has actually been tried?

But this book is valuable for the focus it gives to architecture and perhaps encouraging one to pick up a tablet of graph paper and start sketching floorplans or facades; extract those ideas and use them as fodder for formulating your own. Read the rest with a grain of salt. For a more focused, pragmatic, and obviously tested perspective on cabin-building, get a copy of G. Wayne Fears’ “How to Build Your Dream Cabin.”

4 Stars A lot of general information but not comprehensive.
This book has been quite valuable to me as I plan my cottage in Canada. While it is not totally comprehensive, it does a very good job of explaining many of the relevant concepts of cabin planning, design and a fair idea of the building process. Some useful details concerning construction techniques are provided, as well.

Other reviewers have argued that much is left out–correct, given that the book only runs 240 pages. I think that those reviewers misunderstand the intent of the book: to give the reader ideas, not to hand-hold them through every single step of the process. For example, many of the building plans that are provided are lacking in some key details. So what? I intend to have an architect draw up my plans anyway.

At minimum, I know a heck of a lot more after reading the book than I did beforehand.

5 Stars Terrific Informational Read - NOT Blueprints or Plans, Though
I’m tending to agree with both sides here! And I think it’s a great book. I have been reading building and cabin books for a year (we’re building this Summer). This one is pretty great - a good way to inform yourself about options, the decisions you need to make, kinds of cabins, etc. Another reviewer writes as if I were going to go out and build my cabin based on the info in this book. Now that would be silly wouldn’t it? I need architect drawn plans. So read this wonderful book, and go buy some plans. No, yt’s not a how-to, and it shouldn’t be used that way. But it’s still a great book.

5 Stars Great book on Cabins
We used the ideas in this book to add nice touches to our Mt. Rainier cabin rental. The photos are great and the projects well described. the ideas are very creative.
